Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL’s) last much longer than their incandescent predecessors and use 75% less energy for the same light.  Recently they have become available in many more different shapes and sizes, so that now you can find bulbs to fit almost any fixture and application.  Using CFLs as replacement light bulbs, you will save much more than the extra per bulb cost of the CFL's in the first year. The one caution with CFL’s is that they must be disposed of properly, due to the small amount of mercury that they contain.  But CFLs are definately eco friendly lighting. Just like replacing your incandescent bulbs with CFL’s, you can save hundreds of dollars a year on your electrical bill by replacing them with LED (light emitting diode) bulbs.  LED bulbs have even more advantages over CFL’s except one – they cost a lot more.  LED’s do not contain mercury, are not sensitive to temperature or humidity, turn on instantly, are very durable, and can last over six times longer than CFL’s, but they only save about $1.40 a year as compared to a CFL (60 watt incandescent equivalent) and they are about 9 times more expensive.  However, they are much smaller and their costs are dropping fairly rapidly as the technology becomes more common.  LED’s make the most sense in fixtures that are hard to reach and those that are subject to humid and or extreme temperatures. This is an excellent electricity conservation tip as well as energy conservation.  Level 5
